Get smart

You may not be 99 or even 86 but you still need to Get Smart.  People who work independently tend to focus on core business.  That is, delivering services to clients and developing the business.  We seldom think about our professional development because we can’t bill time spent in training sessions or attending seminars.  This is reality.

And, we may think that, at this stage of our career, we have achieved a high level of expertise and that we are on top of our game.  Think again.  The BBC programme Get Smarter In A Week aired a couple of weeks ago, and, just for fun, I played along with the digital quiz. OMG!  I won’t admit what I scored, but let’s just say it scared the hell out me. So I’ve sprung into action!

Thank goodness the show was full of tips and advice on how to get more mentally agile.  The programme’s participants demonstrated that by making simple changes in day-to-day life, they were able to boost their intelligence test scores by up to 40 per cent in just one week.  These changes included making sure they drank enough water (1.2 L a day), changing their route into work, putting the toothbrush in their other hand, doing Sudoku puzzles, talking to strangers, and more.

Most of us exercise regularily to keep physically fit.  But what do we do to keep our brain tuned up?  Try the BBC’s online quiz and see how you do (it only takes a few minutes).  The website gives you step-by-step advice on how to improve your mental abilities (the memory strategies alone are worth it).  Now I’m off to do my crossword!
