June 30th: This week’s top 5

Earlier this week, I updated my computer with the latest version of Internet Explorer, which has RSS built in, and it’s taking some getting used to. I’m keeping Pluck running, just in case.  In the meantime here are this week’s five items I liked best.
1.  Richard Bailey compares the work of a PR consultancy to that of [...]

Isle of Man Euroclub: Caroline Jackson MEP

I just got in from attending a meeting of the Isle of Man Euroclub.  The keynote speaker Caroline Jackson gave us an insight into how the European Parliament works (and often doesn’t).  Jackson has been described as the most powerful woman in Tory politics, and I can see why.  What a refreshingly frank speaker! In an absolutely BS-free half [...]

Never mind the full stops

I watched a great new show on BBC 4 last night, (well it’s new to me anyway).  It’s a panel show hosted by Julian Fellowes, yes THAT Julian Fellowes (respected actor, author, producer, etc). Now he adds TV presenter to his CV, and he does a jolly good job too!
His quiz show sees celebrity guests competing [...]

Marketing v engineering

There has long been a rivalry between the marketers and the engineers of this world (even in my own household).  Marketing often thinks about blue skies, big pictures and getting results while engineering gets into the nuts and bolts of solving problems and creating solutions.  Sometimes engineering thinks of marketing as a parasite that lives [...]

Cadbury’s will bury 250 tons of chocolate

This story was reported in The Mail on Sunday yesterday.  You may have heard that Cadbury was recalling a bunch of chocolate supposedly contaminated with salmonella. When I first heard about this, the story was that the recall was a precautionary measure. Now I read that the Food Standards Agency ordered the recall and there is a [...]

Ex-pat PRs

Neville Hobson has posted his reading list and dared us all to guess his politcal persuasion.  Well given his profession, you’d expect him to “read around” to keep a handle on all perspectives, so it’s not really a fair challenge.
The discussion in the comments is the best part of the post.  A number of ex-pats are [...]

June 22nd: This week’s top 5

It’s been 20 days since I  posted a Top 5 listing.  So I’m well past due.  Here are my faves for this week:
 1.  Is there a draft in here?  I loved Jon Silk’s post about the writing skills of PR professionals.  It struck a cord because the issue has come up with me at least half [...]

New UK PR blogs

Drew B has highlighted some recently launched UK PR blogs.  James Warren’s looks especially good.  Just fyi.

Blogging help wanted

I’ve noticed two tech PR consulting firms publicising their vacancies on their blogsites. Stuart Bruce is looking for account executives and Ogilvy PR in Washington is looking for similar types.  It’s the first time I’ve come across PR firms using blogs for recruitment.  I hope they update us on how it works.

There’s no such thing as a free lancer…

I’ve been a bit out of the loop the last couple of weeks.  So it took me a few days to notice this excellent post by…the world’s leading….
It’s an interesting look at the economics of freelancing and I think much of it is spot on. But the author fails to factor in the expense of business [...]

Time to crack down on tech at work?

Many clients ask about how to ‘control’ employee blogging.  The level of fear is somewhat surprising, but indicative of the lack of understanding a lot of corporates have for this technology.  In C/net’s Perspectives, Eric J Sinrod, a partner at Duane Morris, gives some good pointers about what to include in a blogging policy along [...]

Working Virtually

All you Strivers ‘get’ the virtual company thing, but how many other outfits do you know of that are working this way? Springboard4Business, based in the London area, is one other outfit I know that has taken the virtual plunge.  Managing director, Jenny Searle recently pushed me an article on their transition.  Click here to [...]

The blogging DTs…

I’ve been travelling all week and unable to update my blog.  It’s surprising how much I missed it, actually.  Anyway this is just a quick post to do some shameless self promotion.  The Isle of Man Newspapers website ran a Q&A about business blogging in which I answered some common question. Have a great weekend [...]

Web 2.0 has corporate America spinning

What every CEO needs to know about the array of new tools that foster online collobration — and could revolutionize business. Business Week gives a very good overview of the new tools that corporate America is using to gain competitive edge.  This is all relevant to British firms too.
In a separate article, Business Week gives [...]

BBC in the USA

Reuters is reporting that the BBC is bringing World News to the US market and launching some new programmes created for the US market.  It will be interesting to see what the take up is.  I used to subscribe to BBC America when I lived over there; now there will be broader access.  I spent [...]

June 2nd: This week’s top 5

It’s been an exciting week in the blogosphere with lots of lively debate. These were my faves:
1. A new addition to the blogsphere …the world’s leading… picks up where PR Bunny left off. Funny stuff.
2. Marcel Goldstein has revisits some lessons about PR consulting.  He touches on short-termism, performance and process.
3. Corporate Engagement has posted an IPR [...]

C/net’s take on MSM and blogging

Greg Sandoval wrote a pretty good overview of how mainstream media (MSM) is coping with blogging.  There’s lots of good examples and a couple of interesting interviews.  Bottom line? They are still feeling their way.

Media Moves for 1 June 2006

Some recent announcements…
CMP Media has changed its name to CMP Technology.  The publisher wants to focus on its core market, the global technology industry. At the same time, the company announced that its medical and health titles will fall under the CMPMedica brand.
The Electronic Business magazine and website have undergone a major makeover.  They are adding more [...]
