Marketing v engineering

There has long been a rivalry between the marketers and the engineers of this world (even in my own household).  Marketing often thinks about blue skies, big pictures and getting results while engineering gets into the nuts and bolts of solving problems and creating solutions.  Sometimes engineering thinks of marketing as a parasite that lives off the creativity of others.  But I think most people agree that as the commercial arm of technology organisations, marketing is actually the lifeblood.

In a former life, I worked for a very engineering-led consulting firm.  One of the top tech-bods…a PhD no less…really resented my existence.  It made him green that a lowly PR-type like me was billed out at £80 more a day than he was, and that I was responsible for thirty percent more revenues each year. He could, at times, be pretty nasty about it.

But I am finding that this attitude is held by an ever-decreasing minority. Seth Godin sums up current feelings in an excellent post entitled, Ten Things Programmers Might Want to Know about Marketers.

  1. In an effort to remain unbiased, yet representative of the majority opinion on this matter; I hope this summary helps:

     Engineer:

    Engineer

    Marketer:

    Marketer

  2. You see what I mean about rivalry in my own household!?

  3. Being married to an engineer myself, and working with TWO!, all I have to say on the matter is that ENGINEERS are a different breed.

Note to Graham - when did you get into modeling?

  4. [...] across an interesting post on Sherrilynne’s blog about differences between techies and marketing folk. Her post directed me to Seth Godin’s [...]
