Finally some good news for the FT

BrandRepublic is reporting that the Financial Times profits are up thanks to increase ad revenues.  This makes a change from all the doom and gloom we’ve heard recently, specifically cost cutting and redundancies.
Just two weeks ago the pink paper announced that 50 editorial jobs were to go, in an effort to integrate newsrooms and channels. This [...]

Strumpette unmasked?

Maybe.  Ron May thinks he’s got it figured out. If he’s right, the Amanda Chapel mystery was solved on day one.

HAT TIP:  Media Orchard for pointing out Ron’s story.

Getting LinkedIn

A friend in the US sent me an invite to join LinkedIn this week, and I decided to go for it.  It’s an online network of 6.5 million professionals around the world representing 130 industries…a MySpace for grownups if you like.
The idea is that people hook up online to build networks for business referrals, job [...]

July 28th: This week’s top 5

There was a ton of excellent content in the blogosphere this week, so whittling my faves down to just five was a challenge. But I managed and here they are (in no particular order).
1. In New Millennium PR, Andrea Weckerle looks at the Coalition for Citizen Diplomacy.  It’s an initiative that would see average American citizens [...]

BBC improves Isle of Man coverage

The BBC is hiring two broadcast journalists to cover the Isle of Man.  They will work from the offices of Manx Radio, but will be employed directly by the BBC.  They will generate stories for TV, radio and the BBC website.
This is great news for the Isle of Man, and many say, about time too.  [...]

NetworkWorld slaps wrists for rule breaking

I couldn’t help but smile this morning when reading Paul McNamara’s blog about an anti-spam vendor’s PR firm got caught spamming journalists.
The story takes me back to when I was working in Washington DC and devoted a good part of my life to getting ink for SurfControl.  I always had a fear about this; it could [...]

How not to flack a luxury holiday

“You too can live out the luxury lifestyle of John Prescott at home on the range…”
This is the lead of a press release picked up by my Google alert this morning.  (I keep an eye on the global luxury travel market because several Strive consultants work with Luxury Explorer, an online source for the world’s [...]

Media Moves for 25 July 2006

Things keep changing at eWeek.   Executive Editor Sean Gallagher  has left to join TechTarget.com as editorial director.
And at Wired News, Kourosh Karimkhany has been named gerneral manager. This is Kourosh’s second stint at Wired.  He spent four years there at the start of his career.  This follows the announcement that Conde Nast acquired Wired News [...]

Top 5 follow-up

I’ve had a few emails about the Top 5 I posted a couple of days ago.  Specifically, they were about item  3…The Washington Post’s profile on Strumpette.  It’s interesting that folks contacted me via email on this, instead of just commenting on the post.  But I respect that not everyone wants to go on the record [...]

July 22nd: this week’s top 5

Well here I am, barely off the ferry and already getting back in the blogging saddle, as it were.  There were hundreds of RSS feeds awaiting my return and as I scanned them I was struck by the ebb and flow of the PR blogosphere.  A week offline gives you a fresh perspective. So, instead [...]

The bonny banks of Loch Lomand

I’m for a few days to gorge myself on tatties and neeps (and a few wee drams).  Have fun while I’m gone.

Net neutrality and online gaming

Ok, so I don’t usually comment on US policy debate, but since there has been much discussion about egambling, and this is a big focus for many Isle of Man companies, I thought I’d weigh in on this one.  I’ve just seen Jon Stewart’s insightful analysis of these two issues.  I think you should too. [...]

July 14th:this week’s top 5

Some great posts from the blogosphere this week.
1.  Happiness lessons for PR people from the Media Orchard is full of good advice.  It’s a good read for clients too!
2.  Thanks to Steve Rubel for pointing out the new NHL’s soon-to-be-launched social net.  Yet, another tool I can use to avoid homesickness during the hockey season!
3.  [...]

Does blogging work?

On the occasion of Strive Notes’ 100th posting I thought I’d review progress.  We started this blog site primarily to create a sense of community among Strive Public Relations consultants, since most of us work from independent offices.  I think we’ve been partially successful in this endeavour with several Strivers taking part in discussions over [...]

We have a telecoms theme this week.
Dan Rosenbaum has been named editor of FierceVoIP magazine which covers all things voice over IP.

Joe McGarvey is writing a column for [...]

Isle of Man ebusiness boost

Today the BBC is reporting a story about a huge boost to the Isle of Man’s e-business industry.
Strive client Netcetera is opening a £10 million data centre in the Island to serve e-gaming and e-businesses here.
It’s good news for the Island and evidence of our thriving economy.

To google or not to google

Yup. It’s finally happened. The Oxford English Dictionary has added “to google” as a verb.  I wonder how Jeeves feels about this? And, if you are using Yahoo! to find something are you still googling it?  Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmm.
Hat tip to FC Now.
UPDATE 9 July 06.  I just noticed a good [...]

July 7th: This week’s top 5

Here are some excellent posts served to my desktop this week.
1. In its dealings with  Healthcare Vox, Jupiter Research demonstrates how to get blogger relations completely wrong.  It’s strange when you consider that Jupiter is supposed to be an Internet specialist.  I’m sure this post had a significant effect on sales.
2. Simon Collister wants to [...]

Top ten lists

I’ve been running a few lists lately so I found Bad Language’s Top ten tips for top ten lists quite amusing. I’ve only recently discovered Matthew Stibbe’s blog but have really enjoyed reading it this past week.  His How to concentrate on writing gave some very good advice too.  I’ve bookmarked this site.  You should too.

BBC to make it personal

I’ve just heard that the BBC plans to let people create thier own personal radio stations from all its varied content across all its services.  MyBBCRadio will hand control to audiences and let them combine what they want to hear, when they want to hear it.  It combines podcasts and BBC Radio Player technology.  And it’s [...]

There is a new UK website to add to your favourites.  PRBusiness has launched a beta site that could prove to be useful.  It promises to cover the UK PR industry:
“With PR Business, the company set out to provide a serious publication looking behind the business of PR and not just the puff. First and [...]
