Big opps in Texas

Even from way the other side of the Atlantic I can spot an excellent opportunity for some lucky public relations consultant in Texas.
Steve Musil at C/net wrote today about how Radio Shack pink slipped 400 employees in Fort Worth by email.  Nice job Radio Shack!
This follows the story that Kami reported a couple of [...]

The English language

My love of the written English language started in kindergarten when I discovered that turning the L in my name backwards made everyone smile.  So I did it deliberately for at least a year, just to have my own little joke with “my audience”.
I just read was just reading on The Dilbert Blog about how a misplaced [...]

Ringing up reporters

Owen Lystrup is a young blogger who is clearly excited about his chosen career PR. Yesterday he posted a plea for some guidance on whether or not you should ring up a reporter after sending an email pitch.
A very lively discussion ensued which revealed some surprising attitudes and practices by PR professionals.  It makes interesting [...]

LinkedIn update

I joined LindkedIn, the online social network about a month ago.  Since then, I’ve seen Stuart Bruce and Teresa Valdez Klein both writing about it on their blogs. So I thought I’d write an update on how my Linkedin experience has been so far.
I joined on 29 July 2006 and have sent invites to about [...]

Make mine a Reese’s

Pete Wilby’s Screaming Headlines takes on the old debate…academic vs. vocational education for people working public relations. As a media studies professor at UCE Birmingham, Pete’s bias is no surprise really, but he gives some good arguments about Tim Luckhurst’s Independent article “What’s the point of media studies?” that ran over the weekend.  I think Luckhurst’s slant stems [...]

US gambling restrictions a boon to Isle of Man

There have been miles of column inches around the world devoted to the recent US crackdown on Internet gambling and the BetonSports scandal.   But here on the Isle of Man the feeling is that it will have a positive effect on our e-gaming sector.
The Isle of Man’s e-gaming ambassador, Bill Mummery says that because we [...]

Wired invites us all to be editors

Wired News is conducting an experiment in collaborative journalism.  They’ve set up a wiki for an unedited article about wikis and have invited us all to “whip it into shape”.  The final version of the story will be published on 7 September.  I’m looking forward to see how it all turns out.  Leave a comment here [...]

If you don’t ask, you don’t get…

Some folks might have been put off by Blogger Scott Baradell’s plea for readers to list his blog Media Orchard on their Technorati Favourites.  Certainly some of the commenters on the post seem to indicate he’s a bit sad to be “pandering for links”.
I read the post and immediately added him to my faves. Why [...]

Sir Trevor rails against spin

John Plunkett has a post at the  Organgrinder about how fed up Sir Trevor McDonald is with the spin dished out by politicians.
I’ve always liked watching Sir Trevor read the news. He’s got an authoritative air and, for me, hearing the news from him is like getting solemn advice from a favourite, much-loved uncle.
Apparently, he thinks the propensity for [...]

August 25th: This week’s top 5

The number one cool thing about this week is that I have only had two blog spams in a whole week.  It’s usually about 10 a day.  Do you think the spammers are all on holiday?
Well at least the PR bloggers have been hard at work all week and here are my five fave posts.
1. [...]

SMO rule 3: link love

I was just reading Rohit Bhargava’s excellent post, 5 Rules of Social media Optimization. And, it occurs to me that I’ve been a bit lax on Rule 3 Reward Inbound Links. So with no further adieu, I would like to thank the following bloggers for their gracious mentions of Strive Notes over the past few [...]

Shame on you Dotster

Web Host Dotster Seeks Spokesmodels  I read this headline and was filled with the kind of morbid curiosity you get when passing a bad crash on the motorway.  I knew I shouldn’t look, that what I would see might upset me. But I just couldn’t help myself.
And guess what?  I was right.  A Washington-state based [...]

Why are there so many ‘chicks’ in tech PR?

B&O’s general manager Sharon Barclay has published some research on why there are so many women in PR.  She concludes that it’s because of three things:

The traditional role of women in society
The environment and business model
Our physical make up, or DNA

We’ll some of her findings are hard to refute. Yup, women as caregivers and nurturers.  [...]

How do you pitch a computer?

I guess we always knew this time would come, but still, when I read the FT story about Thomson Financial replacing humans in the newsroom with computers, I was a bit shocked.
Supposedly they can write and distribute a story in 0.3 seconds. Thomson is so pleased with trials; they plan to expand the practice.
Just last week, Janine [...]

Blogging for the team

Some weeks ago I wrote an article about business blogging for Isle of Man Today.  One thing I didn’t refer to directly was blogging for internal audiences.  Today at BusinessWeek.com Karen Klein gives a good explanation of how internal blogs work, and how they can change the culture of an organisation.
Blogging is a cost effective, yet [...]

Time for a PR reality check?

Managing client expectations is one of the fine arts of public relations consulting.  People get excited about what they do and want to tell the world. But sometimes, through no fault of your own, the column inches just don’t materialise.
A recent client project inspired me to write a column for the Isle of Man Today.  [...]

Striver joins BCS committee

I’ve been appointed to the management committee of the British Computer Society (BCS) Isle of Man Section.  I joined the Section earlier this year and went out to a few events.  I found the speakers interesting and that the Island’s IT community supports them well, so I thought I’d get more involved.
They’ve got me helping out with publicity [...]

August 18th: This week’s top 5

We are now deeply into ”les grandes vacances”, but that hasn’t had much effect on the bloggers’ output.  Here are some great reads from the past week.
1.  Seth Godin looks at pushing out of our compfort zones in his post awkward.  I took a Lou Tice course a couple of years ago where I learned that getting ‘awkward’ was [...]

Stormbreaker showcases Island scenes

Go and see Stormbreaker.  This blog isn’t usually in the business of publishing movie reviews. But I do try to tell people about the Isle of Man and our vibrant economy.  One of the biggest success stories of the past 10 years is Isle of Man Film which co-finances and co-produces major films and some TV [...]

Getting the pitch right

There’s been some griping about bad pitches among PR bloggers in last day or so.  Shel Holtz tips a form letter written by Dan York in rebuttal to the many form letter pitches he’s been getting for his Blue Box podcast.
Kevin at the Bad Pitch Blog has a right rant about “spray and pray” pitches.  And [...]

They are just googling around

Have you heard about Google’s lawyers serving writs on major media outlets that use the word google as a verb?  Elinor Mills  at C/net gives the details.
But really, this must be a stunt. With the verb recently listed in the Oxford English Dictionary, surely it’s way too late to stem the tide.  And, forgive me if [...]

Isle of Man economy up 5 per cent

It’s a great time to be in business in the Isle of Man.  The Treasury has release economic figures  showing the economy has grown by 5.2 per cent in the last year. BBC Online reports that UK’s growth was only 3.2 per cent in the same period. There really is Freedom to Flourish in the Isle [...]

Iran’s president is blogging

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has joined the blogosphere.  I had a look but I don’t read the language. It’s supposedly published in a few lingos, but I couldn’t work out how to get English.
BBC Online obviously did  They say he gives his autobiography in his inaugural blog post and he weighs in on the Israel/Lebenon conflict.   I [...]

Fundraiser victory for Strive

Strivers won a much coveted award at yesterday’s fundraiser for the Port Erin Lifeboat.

We took part in the Shell RNLI Raft Race which saw a field of about a dozen teams competing.  Despite the valiant attempt by our three-person crew, we failed to take the top prize.
But we were awarded “The Most Heroic Failure” prize [...]

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later.   Other Strivers are setting up blogs all of their own.  Stacey has just launched Stacey’s Simard View where today she’s come up with a solution to security problems of air travel.  Check her out. Welcome to the blogosphere Stace.

August 11th: This week’s top 5

It’s Friday again already. Where do the weeks go?  Maybe I’m spending too much time reading blogs?  Here are this week’s faves:
1.  I think Ian Douglas, tech journo at The Telegraph wrote a wonderful blog post describing a day of journalism done the old fashioned way.  Due to unforeseen circumstances his technology was limited to paper and [...]

Ofcom: a radical shift in media consumption

The Office of Communications (Ofcom) released a market report that highlights how the “networked generation” is changing the population’s media habits.  It says that Brit teens watch an hour’s less television than the rest of us. (!)
Teens say that the Internet plays a central role in their lives and the report explains that advertiser are tapping into this trend.  [...]

RNLI raft race fundraiser

This weekend, Strive Public Relations is taking part in the Shell RNLI Raft Race.  It takes place Sunday the 13th and gets underway around 2 pm.
It’s part of a day long fundraiser for the Port Erin Lifeboat that includes stalls, classic cars, model boats and a bouncy castle.  It all takes place on and around the [...]

Duran Duran in Second Life

I’ve been reading about Second Life all over the PR blogosphere, and although I recognise that its an interesting new concept, I had mentally dismissed it as being just a little too geeky for me.
That was until I read on the BBC News website that Duran Duran is planning to hold virtual gigs in Second [...]
