Why are there so many ‘chicks’ in tech PR?
B&O’s general manager Sharon Barclay has published some research on why there are so many women in PR. She concludes that it’s because of three things:
- The traditional role of women in society
- The environment and business model
- Our physical make up, or DNA
We’ll some of her findings are hard to refute. Yup, women as caregivers and nurturers. I get it. Yup, women find it easier to advance in business by focusing on PR because it’s seen as important and acceptable for women. Heard it before.
But whoa…women are genetically predisposed to be better liars than men? You have got to be kidding.
First of all, why does the GM of a well-respected PR firm even begin to factor lying into the skills agenda? Second of all, why does a successful female PR professional even entertain the idea that she is herself a congenital liar?
Thirdly, please explain to me why, even in the 21st Century, gender is still an issue in ours, or any profession.
Thanks to Kristin Fontanilla at bitemarks and Kevin Maney form the USA Today for pointing this story out.

If anyone is interested in reading the full report, which cites scientific research and draws on interviews with people in the industry, I’d be happy to supply it.
Sharon
Are you really happy to supply it Sharon? You’re not lying about that are you?
Sorry Sharon, not buying it..not one little bit. Been in PR for 20 years, probably lost more than one role for refusing to sell the ‘big’ spin. Who paid for the research…sounds to me like a newbie claim.
