ZDnet UK is reporting that LinkedIn, the social networking site for business people, has secured a ton of VC financing (£12.8m) in what may be its first step toward going public.

Seth Godin always has something interesting to say. The other day he wrote a post about the different kinds of marketing efforts that companies tend to make. We strive for No. 4, and we usually achieve No. 2, at least. I hope. It’s a good read. Take the time.

Of online gambling that is. This week’s Tech Talk column gives a run down on what happened at the International Casino Exhibition (ICEi) show last week. It covers some of the highlights and lowlights of the event and finishes up with some top tips on getting the most out of trades shows. Pick up an [...]

It doesn’t matter if it’s a news release, some brochure copy or a blog post, before you write the first word you need to get organised. Foremost in your mind should be the main communications objective of the overall programme, whether it is to:
raise awareness of a product or brand
educate an audience about a [...]

One of the biggest challenges of running a virtual organistion is getting everyone onside with specific technologies. Each of us has technology preferences and often, once someone has settled on a certain tool, it’s pretty hard to move them on. When it comes to instant messaging, at Strive Public Relations…we use Trillian. [...]

Here’s my round up of must-reads for this week in which Art Buchwald’s DIY obit, bad PR pitches, a new blog by a young author, venture capital and the value of blogs are all discussed.
1. The world’s favourite columnist proclaims, “I’m Art Buchwald, and I just died.” Always an innovator, now AB stars in [...]

I don’t think so. Well, you wouldn’t suspect as much anyway from the huge success of the ICEi show at Earl’s Court that is finishing up today. The International Casino Exhibition’s egaming section was a hive of activity with hundreds of companies from around the world taking part. I was there for a day [...]

Manx Radio might be the oldest commercial radio station in the British Isles, but that doesn’t mean that there is anything old fashioned about how it puts programmes together. For the last four months or so, presenters have been using a new digital playout system called Myriad. Find out all about it in [...]

Things have changed. Gone are the sky-high monthly retainers to promote ‘cool’ technologies, regardless of the revenue model, to help boost IPO valuations. Now young tech companies are unlikely to be able to afford much in the way of marketing and PR support. And typically, technical experts that may have only a vague understanding of [...]

A weekend in Paris made this a short week for me, and I’ve been rushing around ever since I got back. But I did manage to get some reading time in. Here’s my faves for this week.
1. The Guardian’s OrganGrinder has a good summary of a report on how to make money from [...]

This week was the Isle of Man chapter of the Institute of Director’s annual “Prestige Lunch”, and I was lucky enough to attend. I was particulary looking forward to the keynote speaker, the Rt Hon Lord George Robertson, former general secretary of NATO, former cabinet minister and host of other top parlimentary and government posts. [...]

Last evening I arrived back after a weekend in Paris, my first visit there in about 10 years. The city is much improved! No dog dirt on the sidewalks; no beggars in the metro. It was sunny and 15 degrees the whole weekend. I had a lovely time.
And, now back to work! This week’s Tech [...]

There was tons of great reading in the PR blogosphere this week, but I managed to hone down my faves to just five.
1. Angie Jeffrey asks does volume matter when it comes to media coverage? The answer? Yes. She links to an interesting white paper on the IPR site too.
2. Shane [...]

A technology company that I think shows particular promise is Interactive Entertainment Media Games (IEMG) Limited, located in Brighton, UK.
The company distributes quality digital games from leading AAA publishers and top brands such as Lego. Their main channel to consumers is a series of web portals along with broadband provider partners NTL and Synacor. [...]

Strive Notes ran series of PR 101-type postings late last year. Every Sunday over several months we got ‘back to basics’ with several ‘how to’ entries that proved to be very popular. To continue where we left off, today we are looking at strategic thinking, the very heart of public relations planning.
A PR strategy is, [...]

Without good communications, the IT department risks missing opportunities to inform people of their true value and may even contribute to misunderstandings and negative perceptions of the IT function.
Those in IT leadership roles do recognise the problem, but are often at a loss as to what they can do. Many take a haphazard approach to [...]

Juan Antonio Giner serves some home truths to the UK national press media. In 10 points he sums up a lot of what’s wrong with the daily and Sunday newspapers and I don’t think he says one thing that is not true. Makes you wonder how/why they stay in business.
Hat Tip: The Telegraph’s Shane Richmond.

Primo PR blogger Steve Rubel is calling on people in the blogosphere to stop all the sniping and nastiness. Of course it would be delightful if this could be achieved, but it’s highly unlikely. What Steve asks people to do is to go against human nature…and that’s never going to happen.
I have to [...]
