Blogosphere! Be nice!
Primo PR blogger Steve Rubel is calling on people in the blogosphere to stop all the sniping and nastiness. Of course it would be delightful if this could be achieved, but it’s highly unlikely. What Steve asks people to do is to go against human nature…and that’s never going to happen.
I have to admit I am often taken aback by the some of the high school stuff that goes on. Last year, Strumpette appeared on the scene taking pot shots at Steve, among others. I think the idea was to get quick traction. It worked; the blogosphere reacted.
And, of course Steve’s employer Edelman has had a considerable share of criticism hurled at it over the last year (think Walmart and Vista).
Although I admire his sentiment, I feel that Steve’s being overly optimistic. Many people never outgrow the high school mentality. If everyone did, EastEnders and Coronation Street would have no audience. Happy New Year anyway, Steve.

Tara, chuck.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Flamewars happened on listservs in the 80s and 90s, people, families and nations have been feuding over silly stuff for centuries (Hatfields and McCoys anyone), movie stars in the 30s era Hollywood studio system were always getting their knickers in a twist over something. And whether is is Rodney King or Steve Rubel pleading for us all to just get along, it ain’t gonna happen. Disagreement is inevitable.
That said, I do think we should strive for a certain level of discourse. Legitimate criticism is one thing. Insults veiled as criticism are entirely different and what creates the high school mentality.
We can’t expect people to agree all the time, nor to mince their words if the feelings or opinions are strong. All we can do is our best to stick to legitimate fair criticism, versus emotional rants.
Thanks for the ’strive’ reference Susan, nice touch! You are quite right though, La plus ca change…
“Insults veiled as criticism are entirely different and what creates the high school mentality.”
Says who?!!!!
And that is the Achilles’ Heel of these A-Listers pleading for civility. If you agree (follow) Getgood’s judgment, then you must be okay. That’s crap.
Bottom line: this whole social networking craze is just that… craze. It’s an anarchist’s wet dream. The dis-intermediaries have dis-intermediated themselves.
Sincerely,
- Amanda
Says who? Well…says Susan, actually. And you have to admit she makes sense. As for this just being a craze…time will tell. Thanks for stopping by Amanda.
Like I said, says who. The point of a disintermediated society is that there is no silo to stand above and judge whether someone is being civil or not. Getgood’s self-serving hypocrisy is too much.
Again, says who?

Come on now Amanda..Be nice!
