Flamewars happened on listservs in the 80s and 90s, people, families and nations have been feuding over silly stuff for centuries (Hatfields and McCoys anyone), movie stars in the 30s era Hollywood studio system were always getting their knickers in a twist over something. And whether is is Rodney King or Steve Rubel pleading for us all to just get along, it ain't gonna happen. Disagreement is inevitable. That said, I do think we should strive for a certain level of discourse. Legitimate criticism is one thing. Insults veiled as criticism are entirely different and what creates the high school mentality. We can't expect people to agree all the time, nor to mince their words if the feelings or opinions are strong. All we can do is our best to stick to legitimate fair criticism, versus emotional rants. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
