Baron Robertson speaks to IoD

George RoberstonThis week was the Isle of Man chapter of the Institute of Director’s annual “Prestige Lunch”, and I was lucky enough to attend.  I was particulary looking forward to the keynote speaker, the Rt Hon Lord George Robertson, former general secretary of NATO, former cabinet minister and host of other top parlimentary and government posts. I knew we were in for a treat…an informed view of world issues and perhaps even an insiders’ view of Westminister.

He started with a joke..always a good tactic for luncheon speakers.  Then we were treated to a 20-minute commercial message on behalf of Cable & Wireless International, a company that is process of opening operations here. It turns out that Baron Robertson sits on their board.  How very, very boring.

Thank goodness a few people had some intelligent questions.  It gave our speaker the opportunity to discuss the future of NATO and of Scotland’s role in the UK.  Now that was  interesting.

  1. He looks like a right twit!

  2. Actually, the Q&A was really interesting. But jeez..we could have done without the commercial message.

  3. I really hate that. Having transferred from the voluntary sector to business a year or two ago I am still utterly appalled to hear the drivel businessmen/women put up with at “Business Breakfasts/lunches etc.

I went to a business lunch in Yorkshire last year which had a speaker who had started his career in football, then switched to managing sports stadia and ended up with the job of overseeing the development of the UK’s new Wembely stadium. He quit not long into the post becasue of the woeful mismanagement of the project…

I was looking forward to an insight into a major governmental/private sector develoment.

What I got was a degrading routine of one-line gags and “apologies to the ladies” for the occasional blue language. A total, total waste of my precious life!

    Rant over!
