Mark Twain once claimed that reports of his death had been exaggerated. That quote came to mind as I wandered around the trade show at ICEi, the egaming component of the International Casino Exhibition that took place in London. Gambling and eGaming companies from all around the world were gathered in Earls Court 1 & [...]

Just a quick reminder that everyone is welcome to join the Isle of Man’s BCS for a celebration of the society’s 50th birthday today. Please join us for a drink, some nibbles and a bit of cake at 5.30 at the Sefton hotel in Douglas. There’s no charge to attend and we’d love to see [...]

There is quite a bit of discussion going on about public relations ethics and our role as ‘professional liars’. Actually, I take exception to that characterisation.
Strumpette has a long narrative outlining the perceived problem. Citing Max Clifford as a credible source undermines the argument, but it is a fairly thorough analysis. Strumpette’s bottom line: [...]

CAD/CAM technology has been used for years to assist engineers, architects and other design professionals. Now InsolePro is bringing CAD/CAM to UK podiatrists for use in fabricating orthotics, shoe insoles that correct abnormal walking patterns.
In The Isle of Man Examiner this week, Tech Talk looks at the technology and how a St Andrews podiatrist [...]

The Financial Times is running a story about The Fox’s Lair Liverpool. It’s the sequel to the successful event, loosely based on the BBC’s Dragons’ Den, held in the Isle of Man last autumn when Fox Capital offered deals to 11 out of 13 finalists to the tune of £10m in total. The Liverpool event [...]

One of the great things about blogging is that your can stretch deadlines! Better late than never, here are my top five posts for last week.
1. The Bad Pitch Blog warns against pay-for-play opportunities. I’ve run into several of these operations myself recently. If you resort to this…you’ve failed your client.
2. The Press [...]

Yes it’s true. The British Computer Society is 50 years old this year. And to celebrate the Isle of Man section is holding a good old knees up.
I know that many of our sessions are a bit too geeky to have much mainstream appeal, but our 28 February event is just a party. [...]

Do you write for people or for machines? Well it would be naive for any blogger to not consider the SEO benefits of the headlines they choose. The Telegraph’s Shane Richmond discusses the pros and cons of writing for SEO.
He says you risk turning off humans if you concentrate to much on keyword indexing. At [...]

Seth Godin has got it right, as usual. He suggests that when it comes to customer service…most companies should just start over. His message resonates with me today because of the half hour I spent with egg, the internet bank that was recently acquired by Citi, on the phone. Useless doesn’t begin to [...]

A lot of companies are waking up to the risks that the blogosphere presents to their brand and corporate reputations, but are at a loss as to how to track and manage the online chatter. There are a number of technologies now available to help with tracking; and public relations professionals are becoming skilled in [...]

The continuing growth in phishing, a criminal activity using social engineering techniques to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, demonstrates how effective the Internet is for crooks in targeting financial companies.
This week’s Isle of Man Examiner Tech Talk looks at the big business behind phishing, new trends and the way forward in beating the fraudsters. It’s on [...]

Manx Radio might be the oldest commercial radio station in the British Isles, but that doesn’t mean that there is anything old fashioned about how it puts programmes together. For the last four months or so, presenters have been using a new, state-of-the-art, digital playout system, Myriad.

When it comes to writing persuasive copy, I always advise against going negative. Being positive always gets better results.
Instead of running down the competition or knocking some else’s ideas, focus on your own positive qualities..and you’ll good by default. Remember the UK Tories “Demon Eyes” campaign against Tony Blair? By knocking the competition in [...]

One theme across the blogosphere this week is just how busy everyone is. Still I’m never too busy to read some of my favorite blogs. Here’s this week’s top picks.
1. Allen Weiner has some interesting comments about the new ways people consume media over at the Gartner Research Blog for the [...]

The Isle of Man is the fourth country I’ve lived in, and one of the first things I noticed when I arrived a year ago was how easy it is to interact with the government. From signing up with the NHS, dealing with the FSC to set up my company, working with the DTI go [...]

I guess most of us who don’t work in the public relations department of Bernard Matthews, a UK leading provider poutry, are breathing a sigh of relief; what a stressful week it must have been for them.
The company culled 160,000 turkeys within 24-hours of the announcement of the outbreak of the H5N1 bird-flu virus. Swift [...]

I am fully aware that it’s actually Saturday the 10th, but work got in the way yesterday. So better late than never…here’s what I enjoyed reading this week…

2. Owen Cutajar made me [...]

Seth Godin’s blog has Yahuda’s great analysis of different kinds of apologies that I found amusing.
Yesterday my webserver gave me the “We’re sorry that we caused this problem” apology when I really wanted the “We’re so sorry that we caused this problem; we are really distressed over this. Please know that we take this [...]

In this week’s Isle of Man Examiner Tech Talk column I took a look at a study by PayPal that showed that while, in some cases, people are embracing new technological advances, many still have only a basic understanding of them.
The article looks at where the responsibility for learning lies…with the individual or the companies [...]

Forrester Research recently published a study that shows that 57 per cent of companies are interested in Really Simple Syndication (RSS) as a marketing channel. The reasons stem from the clear reduction in email marketing effectiveness seen over the past few years along with the growing consumer backlash to what many see as spam.

There is a popular tech PR blog called, …the world’s leading… The name pokes fun at all those PR people who position their clients that way in news releases and other promotional copy. And, there are thousands of them; so probably more than little fun poking is in order.
But correct positioning is an important part [...]

There’s a new name on this weekly feature for no other reason than I couldn’t resist the alliteration :-)
1. …the world’s leading…has a go at late payers. Most consultants know what a pain it can be to have to spend effort collecting on invoices. I’m not sure the approach taken here is advisable, however.
2. The [...]

There’s a not-for-profit group in California that calls itself the Small Business Technology Institute, who recently published some research that’s getting a lot of ink. A key finding is that more than half of small businesses experienced one or more ’security incidents’ over a 12-month period.
Despite this prevalence, many small business owners fail to understand [...]
