PC consolidation continues

GatewayIf you hold shares in personal computer maker Gateway you are probably pretty happy these days. Share prices climbed 50 per cent on the New York Stock Exchange composite trading thanks to the announcement that Acer is to buy the company for $710 million.

Taiwan-based Acer’s takeover of Gateway will make it the third largest personal computer maker in the world, putting it ahead of Chinese rival Lenovo and crucially adding a European and US customer base for the new company.
