Web 2.0 @ CMI

Web 2.0Last night’s CMI event on Web 2.0 was brilliant! There was an excellent turnout and a lot of good questions were asked. People seemed anxious to learn how about the interactive capabilities of the new internet tools, and of the implications for their organisations. It just goes to show there is a lot more work for those of us in the bloggy world to help people cope. Thanks to everyone who came out and thanks again to Chris of PDMS who asked me to take part.

  1. Pity you haven’t mentioned that the event was sponsored by Work Connexions. http://www.workconnexions.com
The only company on the island who has made a significant attempt to untilise this developing opportunity for the benefit of local businesses. Hat’s off to Leo Cussons for having the courage. Wake up Isle of Man. Most of this is free. Just think ‘Free PR’! Sorry Strive.

  2. Sorry workconnexions…my mistake made out of the quest for speed…not an intended slight. In fact I’m a big supporter of workconnexions and have featured them in my Examiner column in the past.

Your claim about being the ‘only’ company would be disputed, I think but at least two publishers I can think of.

And sorry, I think you must mean ‘free publicity’ not ‘free PR’. I’m sure you understand the difference.

Hats off indeed to Leo! He’s a true innovator and obviously quite smart, he hired you Gary, didn’t he?

  3. Unfortunately since The Examiner barred me from blogging for ‘inapropriate comments’, I suggested that their site could benefit if it had some local comment or affiliation, I tend not to read it.
Leo deserves all the help he can get. It’s a great pity that certain businesses see him as a threat. The latest attempt involved an attempt to block his distribution channels. I am sure that he will prevail. “They all laughed at Christopher Columbus…..” and if he hadn’t had courage you wouldn’t be here! Then again neither would Bush…

  4. There’s a world of difference between free publicity and free PR, one can be a result of the other. Companies that don’t appreciate the value of good PR are all too common sadly, and the ones that mistake publicity for PR are just as prevalent. Also there needs to be subtlety in blogging as using a blog that is distributed by a publisher opens up a whole minefield of what can and can’t be said, as the publisher is liable and responsible for any comments made and opinions levelled. “They” may have laughed at Columbus, but let’s not forget that while he did discover the new world, he was still half a world away from where he thought he was…

  5. The Columbus expedition was a business venture that was extremely profitable for all concerned. Apart from the natives of course! I doubt if anybody cared that he was half a world away from anyhwere. I take your points about differenciating between PR and Publicity, but don’t like the idea of censorship creeping into blogging. Guidelines maybe, but not too many restrictions please. As for PR companies writing blogs for CEO’s. No thanks. The last ten years or so has been full of spin. The public are sick of it. Open corporate blogging gives an impression of honesty. This should be encouraged not controlled. Shh it’s the Isle of Man. I best book my one way ticket now. I must be an idiot. This should be blogged on http://www.workconnexions.com unless of course I am barred from their as well.

  6. Oops spelling mistakes creeping in (their/there). Maybe if I had hired a Publicity/PR agent to write it for me it would have been correct.

    Googled PR:

The business of generating goodwill toward an individual, cause, company, or product.

    Also:

or “per rectum” means that the drug is taken as a suppository or gel placed in the rectum.

    Interesting. Heated debate will follow.

  7. Gary, you’ve got way too much time on your hands.

  8. I agree. I retired 10 years ago. I need a hobby.I shall leave you in peace and pick on somebody else. Anyone for tennis?
