No shows…an age old PR problem

Some age old problems with client management have resurfaced for me this week. First of all I had to renege on one interview with a top tier trade magazine because the client’s customer couldn’t find the time, despite assurances that he was available. Grrrrrrrrr!

Then another client backed out of an interview with a UK national daily because he won’t be allowed to give approval of the story before if runs! Grumble.

How frustrating! Situations like these give all PRs a bad name. And when it’s my name in particular that’s getting tarnished, I’m not v happy. So to all reporters, journalists, producers and writers out there…I’m sorry, sorry sorry.

  1. Wouldn’t the world be a much better place without clients. Your narrative and my recent experiences have reassured me that I was right to ‘drop out’ in 96.
“Where have all the courageous gone?
Gone to invest in property everyone.
    When will they ever return,
and when will I ever learn?

  2. Brave words – because your clients can read your blog too. But I applaud your commitment to media relations (those relationships are often more enduring than client relationships).

As to handling clients, it’s about education. I gave so many training sessions for clients that I became a trainer, now an educator. You never win, but need to keep on communicating. I was amazed how many of my clients who supported free markets had a problem accepting a free press. I used to quote former PM Margaret Thatcher to them: ‘you can’t have a free society without a free press’. Copy approval – that’s Stalinist!
