Jo’s Hallowe’en PR top 5

pumpkinIt’s Wednesday so that must mean more blog posts from Jo! Here was me thinking that no one reads my posts when my friends informed me last night they have been having a crafty look for weeks. It seems I have an avid fan in my friend Susie, who eagerly awaits my post today, and who can blame her hey! I hope this keeps you entertained today (during your lunch hour naturally because of course you wont be playing on the Internet when your suppose to be working will you girls?).
1. STRUMPETTE’S ENCORE: 10-Headed Hydra Eats the PR Biz By Amanda Chapel
I read this yesterday on Deana’s recommendations and loved it. Truthful and very funny in places too. I liked point seven. Well, I enjoyed it all really, but because it’s something that I’ve experienced with others since joining Strive PR it made me laugh. I’ve not read this blog previously but by the looks of the comments I seemed to have jumped on the bandwagon a little late. Lets hope Amanda does change her mind and decide to return.

2. I guess I am cheating a little here because technically there are four separate posts here by Peter Wilby on Screaming Headlines, something he calls his Brass Tack’s. They’re about news release and what no to do as a PR writing one for a journalist. They’re short, sweet and quite funny, but also approach some really relevant points of news release writing. I myself can’t recall exactly how much time I’ve wasted time trying to come up with a clever title, turns out I needn’t have bothered!

3. 8 Ways to Make Money Online with a Digital Camera and Your Girlfriend. Don’t panic; it’s not what you think. I haven’t gone mad all of a sudden. When I came across this post I could actually see what it was about, and so I wasn’t drawn in by its clever title, I’m afraid. Although to begin with it was what made me look. However, it was its content that made me stay. 4 Reasons Bloggers Like Lists and 4 Reasons Blog Readers Like Lists is always inspiring when in the middle of writing yet another list!

4. Why agencies need to understand that social media is more than just ‘media‘.
Social media being managed by specialist teams, is this necessary? Should social media be separate from all other media? I don’t think so personally. Social media is exactly that, social. So why confine it to specific teams and departments?

5. Sorry PR people: you’re blocked.

Now. This made me laugh! I think it’s a bit unfair to label all ‘PR people’ lazy. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve made up a media list and tried to get the relevant contacts and the only email shown on an ‘ever so helpful website’ is Editor@ or News@.
So… I make the relevant phone calls ask “can I have the contact details for someone who would be interested in….” for the person on the other end (who heard the word PR and so automatically switched off) to put me straight through to this person (something I did not ask for) and, alas, I get through to another voice mail!! So I am still no further than when I picked up the phone five minutes earlier! When we do manage to get the relevant email address all we ask is are you interested? We won’t be offended if your not, just tell us! It takes two minutes and as a result all the phone calls and follow up emails will stop. We are people too, also with jobs to do so don’t waste our time, and we won’t waste yours. It’s a two way street am afraid!
