Falling into marketing..er PR

Susan at Marcom Maven asks, “Come on, no four-year-old says they want to be a marketer when they grow up… How’d you fall into this profession?”

Civic HospitalI was a 26 year old single mother drifting from one low-paid job to another.   Retail and restaurant work featured large. I knew things had to change so I was looking into how I could get a better paying job.  I took a tour of the Ottawa Civic Hospital that had been organised for ‘women returners’ who wanted to see the job opportunities in healthcare.

The tour was pretty effective.  I knew within a half hour that frontline care was not for me. But I was intrigued by the woman giving the tour.  I asked her what her job was and she told me she was the hospital’s public relations officer. She described her range of duties and I instantly knew that this was job for me.  She advised me to look into the PR diploma programme at Algonquin College which I did the very next day.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Come now the rest of you PR bloggers, share!  How did you get into the biz?
