BCS joins forces with IoD and CMI in IoM

Yup, that’s right all the acronyms together in one room! One night only 20 February, 6.00 pm at the Sefton in Douglas, Isle of Man. Entry is free of charge.

Professor Jim Norton will be speaking on the ‘Responsibilities of directors and managers in IT enabled business change’ at a joint meeting of the BCS, the IOD and the CMI.

“Professor Jim Norton is one of the UK’s pre-eminent policy advisers on professionalism in business,” said Tony Verrall, BCS IOM chairman, “The talk should widen the understanding of where responsibilities lie for all workers, not just directors and managers.”Jim Norton

Directors and managers often believe they do not have to be aware of all the details of a project and leave it up to ‘the staff’. Conversely ‘the staff’ expect certain things of ‘management’, the result of which can be ‘holes’ in the project. These issues will be addressed in the talk by Professor Jim Norton, as well as covering aspects of legislation relating to business change. Advocate Kevin Goldie of Quinn Kneale will also be on hand to discuss Isle of Man legislation to help develop a clearer picture.

Professor Jim Norton is an independent director, policy adviser and public speaker. He is also the senior policy adviser on e-Business and e-Government for the UK Institute of Directors. He is an external member of the Board of the UK Parliament’s Office of Science & Technology (POST) and council member of the Parliamentary IT Committee (PITCOM). Local Institute of Directors Chairman, Howard Callow, commented that, “It is rare to have the opportunity to hear a speaker of Jim Norton’s calibre on the Island, and I would urge anyone with even a passing involvement in business change (particularly if this involves IT) to attend this event on the 20th February”.

The event will be of interest to companies operating on the Isle of Man as well as those with international connections. There will be an opportunity to meet with Professor Norton and Mr Goldie after the event.
