March 12: Jo’s PR Top 5

Birthdayinabox.comUnforeseen circumstances last week meant I had to take a short blog break so slightly later then usual are my top 5…

1. I am a bit of a Harry Potter nut so I would be lying if I said I wasn’t influenced by the ‘mischief managed’ reference. However, the points are good and the example used works well.

2. I’ve not been ‘in the business’ long enough to know, but I liked the idea of a list of timeless and traditional PR practices that have worked, do work and should keep working for many years to come. The list is only small, but that just means plenty of room for additions…

3. Blogger, Shael Sharma splits the phenomenon of PR relationships into two parts with Garbage In; Garbage Out – A Contrarian View on PR Agencies in India. It’s quite a long post and from an India PR industry perspective but a good read with principles that are worldwide, or at least I thought so anyway.

4. 11 Ideas to Enhance the Creative Process, by Zoel Zeff. I haven’t taken them all literally but by combining the basic points into your own daily situation I think they can help.

5. Attitudes like this do annoy me and not because I studied PR and my nose is bent out of shape. My degree wasn’t in ‘PR’ but it was on similar lines and it is quite insulting. Its just arrogance to think that a [PR] degree is of limited use just because a graduate fresh from university can’t write a perfect press release straight away. Does every student studying maths, science and physics become scientists or mathematicians straight away? Do these people not make mistakes too, doesn’t everyone?

When learning to drive, your instructor teaches you enough to pass your test, but your real driving knowledge comes after your test is passed and your out there doing it on your own. The same principle comes with a degree, ALL DEGREES!
Professionals seem to assume that today’s graduates finish university thinking they know it all and assuming that they’re guaranteed a job, we don’t! Graduates are inexperienced, we have loads to learn, but guess what…we know this! All we want is a chance to learn and improve and not endless criticism. Maybe if the professionals spent more time passing on their knowledge instead of criticising us things might change

  1. Great pointers Jo. And really good rant too!

  2. Thanks for the link love, Jo!

Nice rant too - why don’t you post it as a comment on the blog and continue the conversation?

    Kind regards,

    Ben

  3. Agree mostly with what you say. I would just like to add to your point about learning and how much better it would be if professionals spent more time passing on their knowledge instead of criticising.

When I was at school there were good teachers and bad teachers, and its the same in business. My advice would be to make sure you learn the good habits and knowledge from the good professionals, and be brave to challenge, there is a lot of dead wood out there!
