Blogging: it’s not personal
Professional vs Personal by Kerri Birtch grabbed my attention. She discusses something that has often crossed my mind. Kerri asks where do you draw the professional/ personal line when blogging?
I have become increasingly aware when scanning the blogosphere that there is a very distinct divide between bloggers who ‘talk shop’, sometimes even hiding behind a ‘nom de plum’ so as to keep personal information to a minimum and those others who are twittering and blogging about their every move, allowing total transparency.
There have been times where I have discussed my family or personal events on this blog, but have not as yet taken to linking it to my Facebook or to start Twittering. I keep photos of friends and families, nights out and holidays on my Facebook. These are good times I want to share, but do I really want to share them with the blogosphere? And perhaps more importantly, do you guys really want to receive my moody, emotional or drunken status updates?
With continuous updates from friends on Twitter/Facebook/blogs, how long will it be before we get bored and start to block or switch off to the constant influx hitting us?
I know that within every tech craze there is a corresponding thirst for information, but for the time being, the image of me sipping cocktails in a bikini or riding a camel is going to be saved for just a select few – to the relief of many.

Hey Deana (my middle name! Glad to see it on someone else!), I agree completely and have this fix: with regard to facebook and myspace, I keep it a little more tame so that it’s a little bit of the personal insite into me professionally. I do this mostly with protected posts on my personal blog.
I have two twitter IDs so I can tweet during a night out with friends or professional “what am I doing right now” things I want my clients to know.
So far, I’ve been able to gently blur the line between the two without feeling like I was too conservative or to “out there”.
This one surprised me. I have a sister called Kerri Birtch in Canada! But this is definitely a different KB. Still it’s not the most common of names. Kinda weird.
