PR activity reports
Here’s a little explanation about why I wrote the dos & don’ts post earlier this week.
At the end of each month, those of us in the PR consulting business go through a self-flagellation exercised called ‘compiling activity reports’. It’s a tortuous affair where we take a look back over the past four weeks and draw each and every thing we’ve done for each client. Depending on the size of contract, this can range from a couple of dozen transactions to a couple of hundred.
Most of us would rather be spared this monthly blight, but clients demand it. And it is actually a useful exercise when you think about it. Once completed you hopefully have a snapshot of achievement that justifies your existence. But I get panicky when instead I see a picture of hard work with little result.
It’s a given that in PR, nothing is guaranteed. But when you get a run of bad luck, it can get you down. Hence my post.
But now the activity reports are finished and sent off to clients, and I’m a bit more relaxed. I want to say thanks to the reporters that did interview our clients, offered us feedback, apologised when life got in the way and were just generally nice work with.
