Can you deGoogle?

TT Isle of ManA friend from the UK came over for the TT practice weekend. We were enjoying the sunshine on Saturday, snapping pix of each other all day long.
But, she asked, if I were to upload them to Facebook could I please not tag her? The reason? She’d thrown a sickie at work and didn’t want her colleagues to see she was on a bit of jolly.

So no problem. up she went, with no tags. It was simple enough for her to avoid being highlighted online because she made a request when she was still in control. But what about getting internet references removed after the fact?

Have you ever tried to deGoogle something? It seems like an odd idea when you think about how a whole industry dedicated to getting top ranking in search engine listings has emerged over the past few years.  Click here to read the rest of this Tech Talk column

  1. Degoogling is a very good point; Google will remove pages from its index if you ask them nicely and present a worthy case. We had to do that a couple of times last year for clients. It is not the greatest method but it does work.

  2. I’d love to hear an example of a ‘worthy case’?

  3. One particular case was in relation to a job function where the client was listed having an incorrect skill set, Google had indexed that page and subsequently every search on that name produce a hit to that page. Even though the page has been updated, the indexed data was still incorrect. We submitted a request and explanation to Google and 5 days later it was removed.
