Unfortunately I missed the lunch, because I was across - where on Wednesday evening I was listening to and debating with JP Rangaswami (of http://confusedofcalcutta.com - a senior BT director, past Global CIO of Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein etc.). about the future of corporate information, and specifically the need to adopt social networking technologies within corporates as part of their internal interaction and communication infrastructure - social networking is a (the?) IT toolkit that most bright young people understand and use in interacting with their peers to achieve things, solve problems etc. In order to attract those bright young people into our businesses we need to adopt the tools and technologies they are comfortable with and understand how to use into our businesses, so that we can facilitate them in solving business problems and generating business achievement. If companies do not adopt social networking & media technologies into their internal IT platforms they will disadvantage and inhibit these bright young people from achieving, and ultimately cause the best of them to select as employers companies who have adopted social media technologies above those companies still stuck in the dark ages.

If the premise is correct, and I think it is, then the Social Media Landscape is going to change dramatically - not only is it going to become much more ubiquitous, but it will be the new orthodoxy, with massively higher penetration - use of it will become a required skillset for business in the way that word processing, spreadsheets and email are the essential general purpose business technology tools of today.

Change - we ain't even started! Social Networking technology has knock on consequences that JP perhaps hasn't addressed much in his thinking yet, in the enablement and promotion of virtual corporate structures to replace the largely office-bound hierarchical corporate structures we have today. It will therefore probably not only change the way we work, but also the where, what and how, and how we get rewarded. Hang on and enjoy the ride!

Social Media Landscape: Social media is also changing the media world...
Sherrilynne, is it too late to come along?
If so, not to worry and good luck; if not then I can make it at short notice - working just around the corner in Victoria Street.

Printed media has much more of a feel of exposition rather than dialog, as is the case with blogs, forums etc. For example, when I send in articles to the Examiner typically on financial markets I do not expect any replies, where as when I post on an investment forum such as the one at http://www.wilmott.com/ (I'm DrBen), I expect replies. Moreover, after a few years of 'talking' to folks on Wilmott I met up with a number of the regular posters and I felt a real connect with all of these people, and we discussed past conversations as if they where common experiences of old friends.

What exactly is going on here I do not know, but it is an interesting topic of discussion. So count me in...

One of the great things about this is that this act of inviting people is all it takes to get started... though in the areas where the groups have been successful at driving quality conversations, it has helped to piggyback on an existing network, whether a formal or an informal one. Remember, it only takes 2 people to have a great, insightful conversation, as long as those are the right 2 people - so focus on quality questions to explore and dont worry about the quantity of people there.

Congratulations and good luck!

Sounds like a good idea, Sherrilynne. I don't go in for incessant ramblings and pointless ego-massaging as you know, so I can't say I am as willing as perhaps I should be to blog. (Employer/employee considerations also are quite key! I shall say no more ....)

I'm at work during this time, anyway, but I'd be interested in who turns up and how it goes. I do like to keep tabs on island bloggers, particularly if they are interesting and contribute something. Maybe create a special Blog Roll for the event? (Of course, I'm probably way behind you on this one)

Mmmm ... I feel a blog about last night's Bill Gates documentary coming on.
