Digg!: another slant on the bad pitch
The Buzzmakr blog has a great post about Digg! shouts. Writer Natitude says, “My Digg ‘friends’ don’t seem to understand that if I vote for every single submission, it’s going to mean nothing. Shout me the ones you really like or want to go and I’d be happy to vote for it (as long as it’s not a piece of crap). But shouting me every single submission completely defeats the purpose of shouting me in the first place - my vote will mean nothing.”
This echoes the recent discussions on pitching bloggers. It all boils down to one thing: the value of relationships. Numbers count in social media success, but it’s the individual people participating that make make a community. You have to respect that and treat everyone as an individual.
It’s a lot of work, but therein lies the secret of social media success.

We had been thinking about this for a while and when I read the original article I decided to push this into production. Here’s a way to block obnoxious shouters:

The article shows how to use a free Greasemonkey script that will let you maintain an “ignore list” of friends that shout too much.
