A sad day for the noble apostrophe

I was not shocked to read the headline City drops apostrophes from signs.
It just made me sad to read that the city of Birmingham, Britain’s second city, has decided not use the possesive apostrophe on signs in the future.  They say this decision will cut costs and avoid confusion.
Why am I sad? Because I [...]

How to get PR coverage

Today I got some feedback about my weekly newspaper column Tech Talk, and I thought I should address it.
Apparently an Isle of Man-based company has remarked to a government official about something I wrote. It seems I’d mentioned some of this company’s competitors in one of my articles and made no [...]

Stemming brain drain

Image via Wikipedia

For more than two years now, I’ve been banging on about the read/write web, social media and online networks in these pages in the hopes that readers will start to get as excited as I am about the new opportunities offered by Web 2.0.
Finally, I’m seeing signs that enthusiasm in the Isle of [...]

It’s a really busy time for us, but I’ve been trying to keep an eye on who’s saying what.  Here are my picks of some of the best content from the last week or so.

Borat’s PM gets blogging

Image via Wikipedia

Recently a Gen Y woman I know said, “Give up blogging! It’s so last year!” I quipped back, “But in the Isle of Man it’s so two years from now!”
Fortunately I’ve seen a lot of evidence over the last quarter that proves me wrong.  People and organisations are starting to ‘get’ this whole [...]

ThirdThursday, the next gen

ThirdThursday was a rather ‘intimate affair’ this month and I thank John Jamie, Charlotte, Chris, Nathan, Charlie and Owen for attending.
One thing is clear, we need to make a few changes to breath some fresh life into this initiative, so that’s what we are going to do.
Next month, we’re going to change the venue, have [...]

Six laws of online journalism

Image by Berd Whitlock via Flickr

Danish journalists have adopted a new manifesto regarding linking which nicely summarise how the global news industry should be working.  It’s a good framework for bloggers too.  Journalism.co.uk published the six laws in English:
First law: We link to the sources for the data we use in our journalistic products. If [...]

Techies face gloomy new year

Happy New Year one and all. Welcome to the first Tech Talk of 2009!
And what a wonderful time it is to be working in the technology industry, right? Nah…it’s all doom and gloom and, methinks, things will get worse before they get better.
It seems that IT professionals in the North West are already [...]

US Air Force’s rules of blogger engagement

The United States Air Force has published a great planogram on assessing social media risks.  It gives an excellent roadmap on how/if to react to blog mentions that could be easily adapted to most corporates and follows many of the same principles that we use to advise our clients.
I don’t know where it was originally [...]

The embargo myth

Image via CrunchBase

What’s all this we’re hearing about the death of the embargo, thanks to Michael Arrington of Techcrunch?
IMHO the much touted embargo has always been a  myth.  I’ve been in this biz for more than a few years and have worked in different global markets and in all that time, I’ve only ever once [...]

Jan 3rd: PR top 5

There’s been some really fabulous end-of-year and forward-looking posts over the past few days.  Here’s my pick of the top five (in no particular order):
1. Follow celebrities on Twitter.  Fun!
2. The rise of the uber blog is predicted by Duncan Riley.
3.  Steve Hodson is getting fed up with all this nattering about Twitter. [...]
