Profit from UGC?

What if you put up a website and millions of people around the world wrote on it and posted items of interest making you a millionaire with very little effort?  Sounds great doesn’t it? So why isn’t everyone doing it?
Well lots are. There’s YouTube, Flickr, Digg! and Wikipedia along with the uncounted similar sites that [...]

Some top PR blogosphere content from the past few weeks:
1. Kevin Gallagher has some excellent advice about PR and marketing for cleantech startups.

3.  Here’s a very good explanation of [...]

Image via CrunchBase

I’ve noticed of late that my Facebook is getting weird.  I don’t mean just the new layout.  It’s the activity I’m seeing and my community as a whole, that are  getting a bit strange.  Seeing friends from high school, college,  different places I’ve worked over the years alongside my kids, cousins and drinking [...]

Six months in PR

The past six months have certainly flown by and I have been on a steep learning curve from the outset. My introduction into the world of PR has been interesting, varied and exciting. One of the aspects I have enjoyed the most is that in this line of work you really do learn something new every day. The variety of clients I have been exposed to has meant that I have gained a valuable insight into a wide range of industries.

Do companies get the ‘press’ they deserve?

Earlier this evening, I attended the the Isle of Man Charter Institute of Marketing’s event at the Hilton in Douglas.  Stewart Gowans was our guest speaker on the subject of ‘do companies get the press they deserve’.
I thought the reference to ‘press’ in the title showed a little irony, considering the event had [...]

My SXSWi: British Digital Mission

I’m like a kid in a candy store.  That’s because I’m at the South By Southwest Interactive festival in Austin, Texas, where thousands of bloggers and Twitterer from all over the world have gathered to meet and tweet.
I’m here with the British Digital Mission, a collection of 35 companies from the UK who have banded [...]

Social media in the Isle of Man

Social media enthusiasts on the Isle of Man were treated to a double-whammy yesterday with the monthly event ThirdThursday and later in the day, the British Computer Society (BSC) hosted a podcasting event presented by Derek Richardson.
Following last month’s Super ThirdThursday, a few new faces joined the monthly lunch at the Paparazzi. About 15 people [...]

My SXSWi: video journalism

I certainly enjoyed my trip to Austen’s South By Southwest Interactive festival where thousands of social media and Web 2.0 enthusiasts gathered for five days to share ideas and information.  Oh and have fun. And, we mere mortals get to brush shoulders with some of the industry’s biggest names.
I’ve written a long column on the [...]

BizSpark now in Isle of Man

Last week my firm launched a tech start up at the DEMO conference in Palm Springs, California.  Our client was the only British company participating this time and the overall number of star-ups was half what it had been in previous years.
But still, the place was packed out with venture capitalists and reporters [...]

Podcasting is a technology that a number of individuals, companies and even traditional media stations are starting to embrace. It’s a relatively new term, around five years old, that encompases the creation and distribution of digital media is a form that can be subscribed to and syndicated. Now, everyone has a [...]

Facebook conditions controversy

Branding, when done well, generates predictable attitudes and behaviours in people.
So people expect Virgin to provide quality, innovative products and services and when Ryan Air hinted that they’d consider charging for the use of the toilet on their aircraft, people might have laughed at the suggestion, but no one was surprised.
Branding problems start [...]

ThirdThursday 19 March 2009

Following on from the success of our first ever Super ThirdThursday in February everyone is invited to attend our lunch meeting 19 March 2009.  We revert to ‘regular’ format for this one, so that means we all meet at Paparazzi in Douglas at 12.30.  We had a record turnout last month so I hope all [...]

Blackberry v iPhone

I’ve  been waxing lyrical about my beautiful BlackBerry Pearl in these pages for some time now.  I’ve really come to understand the ‘crackberry’ syndrome and as am still learning to use new applications all the time I’m finding my dependency growing.
I love it, there is no denying it. So you can imagine how I felt [...]
