Effective client management is an art

I was just reading Sally Whittle’s post about how ‘clients suck’ and was reminded of an incident this week. Sally’s premise is that it’s hard to deal with some client’s egos. My response is client ego becomes less of an issue as you become more experienced and skilled in PR consulting.  [...]

PR: clients are like lovers

In PR consulting, getting a new client is like taking a new lover.  When the consultant and the client first become aware of each other they feel a strong attraction. They may spend some time together getting to know each other or they may jump right in.  Then when they first get together there is [...]

PR activity reports

Here’s a little explanation about why I wrote the dos & don’ts post earlier this week.
At the end of each month, those of us in the PR consulting business go through a self-flagellation exercised called ‘compiling activity reports’.  It’s a tortuous affair where we take a look back over the past four weeks and draw [...]

An adventure in PR

About  a month a go I’d made the decision to change a few things to see what happens.  I’d cut back on my volunteer and charity work, outsourced some admin, taken a breather on business development activity and refocused my attention on core services.
I could not possibly have predicted the quick and profound effect these [...]

Body image in business

So, hands up how many promised to attend the gym or eat more healthily for 2008, but after a couple weeks have resigned to their 2007 habits?
We all have body issues, I think it is healthy to do so to a degree and as we reach each new decade, the issues seem to shift. I [...]

Coming clean on virtual consultancy

I think it’s about time I came clean about something. Strive Public Relations is no longer a virtual consultancy.  We moved to a mixed virtual/traditional model about six weeks ago. Let me explain.
The business was growing to a point where it was impossible to maintain the virtual status.  We needed to hire some support staff, [...]

Friday’s five: February 16th

One theme across the blogosphere this week is just how busy everyone is. Still I’m never too busy to read some of my favorite blogs. Here’s this week’s top picks.
1. Allen Weiner has some interesting comments about the new ways people consume media over at the Gartner Research Blog for the [...]

Friday’s Five — February 2nd

There’s a new name on this weekly feature for no other reason than I couldn’t resist the alliteration :-)
1. …the world’s leading…has a go at late payers. Most consultants know what a pain it can be to have to spend effort collecting on invoices. I’m not sure the approach taken here is advisable, however.
2. The [...]

The four-step PR process

Strive Notes ran series of PR 101-type postings late last year. Every Sunday over several months we got ‘back to basics’ with several ‘how to’ entries that proved to be very popular.  To continue where we left off, today we are looking at strategic thinking, the very heart of public relations planning.
A PR strategy is, [...]

December 15th: this week’s top 5

There’s been some interested stuff going on in the blogosphere this week: controversy, scandal and the usual mutterings. Here’s five posts I enjoyed.
1. Organ Grinder gives an overview of at the meltdown at TechCrunch UK. It’s pretty amusing stuff when you consider how much blogosphere attention has been spent on these events.
2. [...]

November 10th: this week’s top 5

I have to admit, this week has been manic and I’ve not been able to do as much reading as I’d like.  But still, I’ve found five great posts!  Here they are:
1.  Josh Hallet warns of the danger of Snake Oil Salesmen in the social media realm with his Shaking out things post.
2.  Stephen Davies is throwing out his ideas on [...]

Four considerations in selecting a PR consultant

1. Competence and reputation. How long have the consultants been in business? How big is the firm?  What are their annual billings? What type of accounts do they have? Do they have samples of their work?
2. Experience.  Who are their current clients? Past clients? How many clients do they have, and for how long have they served [...]

October 27th: this week’s top 5

It’s probably obvious to anyone who reads Strive Notes regularly that posting has been irregular recently.  I’ve been on the road for the best part of 10 days and blogging only intermittantly.  Now I’m back at my desk, and things will return to normal.  I haven’t been reading my fave bloggers all that regularly while [...]

September 29th: this week’s top 5

Friday has come around quickly once again. So here’s this week’s round up of some of the blog posts I’ve enjoyed the most this week.
1.  Todd Defren looks at the Paradox of Excellence: The better you perform, the more invisible you become.  How true that is. The client comes to expect to be on the front page of his [...]

Advice please…branding question

A client is about to launch a new global service that, if successful, will transform the company’s business model.  They’ve made a significant financial investment and are taking a considerable risk with this new service.  However they plan to launch it under what I consider to be a very weak brand, and I’d like to hear some [...]

September 8th: This week’s top 5

Well the summer holidays are definitely over and  the pace at Strive has picked up! So much so, that I struggled to keep up with my reading this week. But I did manage to enjoy some pretty compelling posts I’d like to share.  Here they are in no particular order:
1.  The debate about media studies qualifications continues with Richard Burton, [...]

Vendor survey highlights internal coms priorities

We’ve been telling them this for years.  People need to quick access to current corporate information to be good at their jobs.
This week Computing looks at the issue from an infrastructure point of view.  They are reporting the findings of a survey from vendor Information Builders which found that employees would be more effective in [...]

StriveOnCall delivers affordable PR

Today we are launching a new service, StriveOnCall, a service for organisations that may not need a PR agency all the time, but would benefit from having access to expert help.
The idea came up when earlier this year I met with folks from more than a dozen companies here on the Isle of Man.  It [...]

August 25th: This week’s top 5

The number one cool thing about this week is that I have only had two blog spams in a whole week.  It’s usually about 10 a day.  Do you think the spammers are all on holiday?
Well at least the PR bloggers have been hard at work all week and here are my five fave posts.
1. [...]

NatWest Three: burning question answered

I think we have the answer to my earlier question about the NatWest Three.  In last week’s Top 5 I tipped Simon Collister’s post about who paid for the NatWest Three’s PR prior to their extradition.
Today’s Telegraph covers the launch of a new service from AIG Europe (UK), which provides directors’ and officers’ insurance for more than [...]

How not to flack a luxury holiday

“You too can live out the luxury lifestyle of John Prescott at home on the range…”
This is the lead of a press release picked up by my Google alert this morning.  (I keep an eye on the global luxury travel market because several Strive consultants work with Luxury Explorer, an online source for the world’s [...]

July 14th:this week’s top 5

Some great posts from the blogosphere this week.
1.  Happiness lessons for PR people from the Media Orchard is full of good advice.  It’s a good read for clients too!
2.  Thanks to Steve Rubel for pointing out the new NHL’s soon-to-be-launched social net.  Yet, another tool I can use to avoid homesickness during the hockey season!
3.  [...]

Does blogging work?

On the occasion of Strive Notes’ 100th posting I thought I’d review progress.  We started this blog site primarily to create a sense of community among Strive Public Relations consultants, since most of us work from independent offices.  I think we’ve been partially successful in this endeavour with several Strivers taking part in discussions over [...]

July 7th: This week’s top 5

Here are some excellent posts served to my desktop this week.
1. In its dealings with  Healthcare Vox, Jupiter Research demonstrates how to get blogger relations completely wrong.  It’s strange when you consider that Jupiter is supposed to be an Internet specialist.  I’m sure this post had a significant effect on sales.
2. Simon Collister wants to [...]

Blogging help wanted

I’ve noticed two tech PR consulting firms publicising their vacancies on their blogsites. Stuart Bruce is looking for account executives and Ogilvy PR in Washington is looking for similar types.  It’s the first time I’ve come across PR firms using blogs for recruitment.  I hope they update us on how it works.

There’s no such thing as a free lancer…

I’ve been a bit out of the loop the last couple of weeks.  So it took me a few days to notice this excellent post by…the world’s leading….
It’s an interesting look at the economics of freelancing and I think much of it is spot on. But the author fails to factor in the expense of business [...]

June 2nd: This week’s top 5

It’s been an exciting week in the blogosphere with lots of lively debate. These were my faves:
1. A new addition to the blogsphere …the world’s leading… picks up where PR Bunny left off. Funny stuff.
2. Marcel Goldstein has revisits some lessons about PR consulting.  He touches on short-termism, performance and process.
3. Corporate Engagement has posted an IPR [...]

Two cultures divided by a common language

This quote has been stuck in my mind since I read Stuart Bruce’s post over the weekend. There are so many differences in the way PR is conducted in the UK and US, as I discovered during my stint in DC.
American PRs spend less time writing copy than their UK counterparts. They spend more time [...]

The news release is dead…long live…

Todd  Defren has posted a Web 2.0-based news release template on his blog.  Reaction seems to be generally positive, with some taking a “wait and see” attitude.
The idea is to ensure all new media needs are met with one document. It’s a good idea and should cut down on some to-ing and fro-ing during the [...]

buffet-leads creating new business? vox pop

OK folks in the PR world….I’m doing a little market research.  I’ve become aware of an online service called buffet-leads who provides first stage qualified business leads that are obtained via telephone research.
The idea is that they sell the lead a limited number of times (say three to eight times) for a fee that ranges [...]
