How to find a job with LinkedIn

Down on your luck? When looking for a job, the old adage ‘it’s who you know’ has never been more true because online social networks are rife with opportunity for job seekers.
And for professional people in the Isle of Man that means LinkedIn.  I’ve been on LinkedIn since early 2006, but it wasn’t [...]

Image via CrunchBase

I’ve noticed of late that my Facebook is getting weird.  I don’t mean just the new layout.  It’s the activity I’m seeing and my community as a whole, that are  getting a bit strange.  Seeing friends from high school, college,  different places I’ve worked over the years alongside my kids, cousins and drinking [...]

Stemming brain drain

For more than two years now, I’ve been banging on about the read/write web, social media and online networks in these pages in the hopes that readers will start to get as excited as I am about the new opportunities offered by Web 2.0.
Finally, I’m seeing signs that enthusiasm in the Isle of [...]

February’s meeting of the Isle of Man Social Media club is open to all and is taking on a whole new personality.  The first-ever Super ThirdThursday takes place on 19 February, 12.30 to 14.00 at the Claremont in Douglas.
First of all, you don’t have to buy your own lunch because Strive PR is sponsoring the [...]

21 Dec: PR top 5

Image via Wikipedia

I’ve been trialling a new feedreader this week, and while I can’t say too much about it yet because it’s pre-beta, one thing is for certain, I certainly have been getting a gander at a broader range of Internet content as a result.  This is reflected in this week’s top 5.
1. Charles Arthur [...]

Thirdthursday gains momentum

The Isle of Man Social Media ThirdThursday initative is gaining strength.  Yesterday we had a record turn out with 13 of us meeting at Paparazzi in Douglas to talk about blogging, Facebook, LinkedIn and social media in general.   The whole idea behind ThirdThursday is that in terms of social media and Web 2.0, if you [...]

Third (Fourth) Thursday October

Just a note to let everyone know there will be a meeting of the Isle of Man Social Media club this Thursday at 18.00 at Paparazzi in Douglas.
The club’s credo is ‘if you get it, share it’. And that’s what these get togethers are all about.  Anyone with an interest in Facebook, blogging, Twitter, LinkedIn [...]

PR top 5 June 22

It’s been a busy week, but I’ve managed to check out most of my fave blogs this week.  Here are the posts Iiked the best.
1. On Pro Blogger, Darren Rowse explains why PR people are starting to contact bloggers in droves and how to handle them in Understanding PR people for fun and profit. Good [...]

May’s fave five

Each month, I write up a round up of the previous month’s most popular posts on Strive Notes.  Interestingly, this month only one of the fave five relates to PR…the rest are tech stories.  Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm.  Perhaps we’re not engaging in the PR conversation the way we should be?  I’ll think [...]

LinkedIn, you’ve come a long way

Last week my daughter pinged me on Facebook. ‘Check out LinkedIn, a kind of Facebook for business enthusiasts,’ she said.

It made me smile that she’s pegged me as a ‘business enthusiast’, but she had reminded me about the very first online social network I’d joined back in 2006. Back then I’d joined up and quickly [...]

February 7th: Jo’s PR top five

I’ve been off jet setting again. This time however, I ditched the summer sun and headed for a new experience on the snowy slopes. Amazingly, I returned in one piece.
1. The first thing I know a lot of people have been following, whether it be consciously or not, is the U.S. presidential election. The largest [...]

LinkedIn to go public?

ZDnet UK is reporting that LinkedIn, the social networking site for business people, has secured a ton of VC financing (£12.8m) in what may be its first step toward going public.
The story says LinkedIn will use the dosh for product development and to help market the network internationally.
This has got to be a good initiative. [...]

September 22nd: this week’s top 5

This week I posted a record number of items to del.icio.us. There is just so much good original content and informative debate going on.  It was hard to choose my favourites. But here they are in no particular order.
 1.  Steve Rubel has an interesting post about how Wikipedia articles on the top US advertisers are among the most highly ranked pages in [...]

LinkedIn update

I joined LindkedIn, the online social network about a month ago.  Since then, I’ve seen Stuart Bruce and Teresa Valdez Klein both writing about it on their blogs. So I thought I’d write an update on how my Linkedin experience has been so far.
I joined on 29 July 2006 and have sent invites to about [...]

Getting LinkedIn

A friend in the US sent me an invite to join LinkedIn this week, and I decided to go for it.  It’s an online network of 6.5 million professionals around the world representing 130 industries…a MySpace for grownups if you like.
The idea is that people hook up online to build networks for business referrals, job [...]
