Banker’s reputation in ruins

This is a cross post from our new blog at sherrilynnestarkie.com .  Please reset your RSS to the new site.
When is comes to apportioning blame for the current economic recession, it seems that bankers are getting the lion’s share, according to a PR Week survey carried out by research company OnePoll.
In fact, [...]

Communicating bad news in hard times

The second edition of Exclamation magazine, which I edit on behalf of Bridson & Horrox, the Isle of Man printing and stationery company, was issued this week.   This story is my editorial contribution.
They say that when you laugh the world laughs with you and when you cry you cry alone.  But during these recessionary [...]

Social media’s time has come

Yesterday we held our first open course of our workshop:  Getting to grips with social media, and it was a resounding success!  Twenty-four people, representing a range of industry, public and private sector and various job descriptions, turned up for this four-hour session that covered everything from the basics about tools and social platforms to [...]

Lansons Communications chief at CIM Isle of Man

Lansons Communications Chief Executive Officer Tony Langham addressed a meeting of the Isle of Man’s Chartered Institute of Marketing group.  He gave an overview of the work his firm is carrying out on behalf of the Isle of Man government; a 16-person media relations team is trying to raise awareness of the Island as a [...]

Changes for Strive PR

Today at our social media workshop we announced that Strive PR is forming a strategic alliance with PDMS Limited to create the Isle of Man’s premiere social media consulting service. We’ll be serving UK clients and those from further afield too!
It’s become glaringly obvious over the past several months that those professional communicators who have [...]

Measuring Twitter influence

I was chuffed when earlier this week I was included in the PR Top 100 according to Edelman’s Tweetlevel.
Crowdsurfing author David Brain explains Tweetlevel on his blog: “Yet again we brutalise complex human concepts like trust, popularity, influence and engagement with our over-simplistic (but pretty bloody clever) algorithms.”
In the post’s comments, there’s a lengthy debate [...]

November 5th: PR top 5

After an embarrassingly long absence due to family and business circumstances too numerous to mention, we finally have the return of the PR Top 5.  Here’s what I’ve been loving this week!
1. When PR 2.0’s Brian Solis talks, people listen. And when he talks about news release embargoes (always favourite link bait subject), people comment [...]

PR and social media evaluation

I was in Ottawa for a couple of weeks and Joseph Thornley of Thornley Fallis was kind enough to invite me along to the Ottawa Third Tuesday meet up.  Nevermind,  it was on the fourth Friday of October, it was still a great event with more than 75 people turning up for breakfast.   I [...]

Mobile adverts are the way forward

As global advertising revenues continue their freefall and traditional mainstream media struggle to cope in the new digital world, there’s more bad news from research company Gartner.
A newly published report projects that mobile advertising spending worldwide will grow by 74 per cent this year to $913.5 million and will accelerate in 2011 when advertisers are [...]

How to identify key audiences

To be successful in public relations, you need to know which people you need to reach and how to communicate with them.  Get this wrong, and you might as well forget the whole campaign.  Correctly defining the target audience is the key because you’ll more than likely need to communicate differently with each group, depending [...]

16 July, Third Thursday Social Media Club

Wow, time is racing by!  Next week 16 July is Third Thursday in the Isle of Man and that means that everyone is invited to drop in for lunch with the Social Media Club at Paparazzi on the Promenade in Douglas 12.30 to 14.00.
Anyone who is interested in Twitter, Facebook, blogging, podcasting or any online [...]

Online reputation management

A lot of people in the Isle of Man are quite excited about the Government’s initiative to help get Island retailers online.
There’s been some negative publicity about the e-commerce platform that’s been selected and since I write about technology on these pages every week, I’ve been following the story with interest.
For someone in my line [...]

Social Media Club IoM: Third Thursday 18 June

Image of Social Media Club

TT Festival 2009 is in full swing here in the Isle of Man, but next week it will be back to work and normal life.  So hopefully everyone will have time to turn up at Paparazzi for the Social Media Club’s Third Thursday get together.
Each month, the Island’s bloggers, Twitterers, Facebookers [...]

June 10: PR top 5

1. Steve Rubel and his colleagues at Edelman have put together a white paper on the role of search engine visability in reputation management. The main contention is that increasingly, search engines will have a critical impact on how brands are perceived. It’s well worth the read, especially the information regarding the importance of benevolence [...]

June 4: PR top 5

There seems to be a theme about ‘giving it away’ in the PR blogosphere this week.  I guess it’s a sign of the times, but what about those green shoots we keep hearing about?  Either way, here’s my top 5 blog posts from the past week.
1. Lloyd Gofton has a go about ‘devaluing PR’.  He [...]

Getting quality PR on the cheap

I laughed until I cried when I watched this the first time.

Thanks to Steve Waddington for pointing it out.

Six months in PR

The past six months have certainly flown by and I have been on a steep learning curve from the outset. My introduction into the world of PR has been interesting, varied and exciting. One of the aspects I have enjoyed the most is that in this line of work you really do learn something new every day. The variety of clients I have been exposed to has meant that I have gained a valuable insight into a wide range of industries.

Do companies get the ‘press’ they deserve?

Image via Wikipedia

Earlier this evening, I attended the the Isle of Man Charter Institute of Marketing’s event at the Hilton in Douglas.  Stewart Gowans was our guest speaker on the subject of ‘do companies get the press they deserve’.
I thought the reference to ‘press’ in the title showed a little irony, considering the event had [...]

DEMO breaks DEMO embargo

Please read the message below from Chris Shipley. (edit: Shipley is DEMO’s executive producer)
“As you may have seen, late last evening a Silicon Valley blogger posted an electronic copy of the DEMO 09 program guide, which he apparently received from one of his readers.  Following his post and reasoning that the embargo had been broken,  [...]

Are social networks going mainstream?

Image via Wikipedia

The current tough economic times combined with an increased awareness of Web 2.0, or interactive web applications such as social networks and blogs, is driving take up of social computing among marketers, according to an insight paper just published by Forrester Research.
Last year there was an increase in the adoption of all social [...]

February 22nd: PR top 5

I’ve been neglecting my Top 5 lists of late, owing to the pressures of work.  But that doesn’t mean I’ve not been keeping an eye online.  Lots of great stories are being told.  Here’s what I liked this week:
1. Jade Goody, PR and the media is a thoughtful post by Heather [...]

Two new bloggers joined the Isle of Man online conversation this month and I’m pleased to tell you that they are both young Strivers!
Account Assistant Charlotte Beeman (aka LottieB)  is the author of Pretty Geeky, which looks at “… from make up to clothes, from careers to technology and anything and everything that’s inspiring.”
At Celebrity [...]

How to get PR coverage

Today I got some feedback about my weekly newspaper column Tech Talk, and I thought I should address it.
Apparently an Isle of Man-based company has remarked to a government official about something I wrote. It seems I’d mentioned some of this company’s competitors in one of my articles and made no [...]

Borat’s PM gets blogging

Image via Wikipedia

Recently a Gen Y woman I know said, “Give up blogging! It’s so last year!” I quipped back, “But in the Isle of Man it’s so two years from now!”
Fortunately I’ve seen a lot of evidence over the last quarter that proves me wrong.  People and organisations are starting to ‘get’ this whole [...]
