2008 tech predictions

As the year draws to a close, many industry pundits are taking some time to peer into their crystal balls to make predictions for the year ahead.

One technology that had a lot of hype in 2007 is destined for great things next year. Research firm Gartner predicts that virtual worlds will have a significant impact on the retail industry.

It says that, by 2010, 20 per cent of global top-tier retailers will have some kind of marketing presence in virtual worlds and online games. This is not surprising considering that Gartner published an emerging trends report earlier this year which predicted that 80 per cent of active internet users and Fortune 500 enterprises will have virtual world presences by 2011.

  1. Went to a seminar and heard from a guy at ABN Amro’s innovations department who have developed their own island and even have conferences and recruitment days in second life. They feel there is a future in these worlds and the investment now will give them the edge when things start to pick up.

Still a fairly quiet place to visit though. Keep having a wander through second life and not a lot of activity yet. I think their investment as well over £500,000 so not always a cheap option either!

  2. James, what the seminar in the Isle of Man?
